-As a way to help out those who have not read the books before, if there is something in your comment that could be deemed spoilery (I.E. pertains to the plot of later books) the start off the comment with a nice big ***SPOILER***

***REMINDER***

I am going to be out of town for the next week. I will have internet access but it's sketchy as to when I'll be able to post the new days discussion thread. I'll do my best, so bear with me. I absolutely promise not to miss a day.

  1. Something I've always found fascinating is that we never again hear Hagrid referred to as the Keeper of the Keys. I'm left wondering what that actually means. It's clear Hagrid doesn't actually go around collecting new students so who's keys are actually under his control? Just the orphans? Or just Harry? It doesn't make a lot of sense.

  2. Doesn't Hagrid carry around a large key ring at Hogwarts? Isn't that why he is the "Keeper of the Keys"?

Thank you Casi for the idea of the spoiler alert. Much appreciated.

  3. Do the Keys really not come up ever again? We'll have to keep our eyes open.

Regarding spoilers - one of the great joys of rereading HP is finding all the details and seeds JKR planted. I am constantly astounded by the richness of her continuity. I always imagine she had a giant poster on her wall with all the plot threads on it, across all 7 books. How else could she do it? I would like to be able to talk about them because I think they're important. I can certainly add a spoiler alert - but it will probably mean everything I write is off-limits to SJ HB.

    SPOILER

Love Hagrid's pink umbrella - first sign of what comes up in Book 2 and the original suspect of heir of S.

  4. OK, I get it, I'm in the minority here. :) I'll accept the spoilers, but please just warn me ahead of time so I know I'm being spoiled. It sounds like I need to read all 7 books and then turn right around and reread them to fully enjoy everything. Did I mention that I've only seen the first movie, too? I'm really good at keeping myself in the dark.

Not wanting to ruin anyone else's fun, so I think I'll be reading ahead...

  5. Hmmm, I don't remember anything about keys later, either. I will be keeping my eyes open for that, too.

    Talking about the movie:

I love that Dudley gets a pig's tail in the movie because he is eating Harry's cake. Also, Hagrid gets really angry at the Dursley's in the book. In the movie, he is gentler and I truly love his reading of "You're a wizard, Harry."

  6. I thought it was interesting how hard the Dursley's tried to avoid the letters, when they didn't do nearly as much in the movie.

  7. I am truly enjoying rereading the book. Thanks for posting the idea! I hadn't realized how much of what is in the later books is alluded to in the first. No spoilers here, just loving seeing some folks who also show up later.

I had forgotten how absolutely manic Uncle Vernon becomes about the letters. Imagining him gibbering into his mustache while driving all over the countryside has kept me chuckling.

  8. I never appreciated uncle vernon's loathing of motorcyclists until I visited in england. here, idiots who ride between lanes and squeeze between cars is unusual. there, it's the norm.
