  1. Did anyone else find it really odd that Hagrid let some of the kids go off without an adult in the Forbidden Forest? Hagrid himself is very aware of the dangers and mentions it on several occasions. This is one of those moments where my reading brain was screaming "PLOT DEVICE!!!".

  2. Yes, this is an odd chapter. After all the warnings about the dangers and given the fact that something is killing the unicorns, sending a couple of first years off with Fang (who really is a coward) was a definite plot device. It reminds me of the kids who go in the basement in the horror movies.

  3. Well not only that, but why did they have to do this after dark? I mean, it's off limits to all students and yet we're going to serve detention there in the middle of the night?

  4. I'm wondering if it is easier to see unicorn blood at night...perhaps it isn't visible...or at least AS visible in the daylight hours. I think Hagrid's love for animals overcomes his sensibilities here... he does mention that even though it's dangerous, they've got to do it. As for having the kids do it, even though it's dangerous, he tells them that they should be all right if they stay on the paths and are with Fang or with him. All the creatures in the forest know Fang, and it could sort of be like having a hall pass in school... you're not supposed to be in the halls during class, but the hall pass is your 'get in free' card... Being with Fang let's all the creatures in the forest know that these kids are under Hagrid's care, so please let them pass safely. What do you think?

  5. Heartwriter, good points.

Maybe the section they were in was safer "on the paths", except Voldemort was there, which was not expected.

I remember from Chamber of Secrets the section with Aragog and all his family in the forest. Hagrid's friendship didn't save them but he never would have thought that they would do that to the boys. If he had been with them, it probably would have been different. Maybe that was a different part of the forest.

BTW, that scene in the movie with Aragog & friends is way too icky *shudder* It's the part I skip when I check out the movie again! Blech!
