I read them through carefully the first time through the books, but with each succeeding read, I skim over quidditch more and more. I find the reiteration of the rules of the game in each book particularly tiresome.
I'd rather read about them than watch the scenes in the movies. Movie quidditch is way more violent than my imagination's quidditch.
I think there's at least one thing in each quidditch match that advanced the plot, even if it doesn't become useful knowledge until much later. Remember that even though there are seven books, it is one story, with one plot, and seven main subplots, with many sub subplots within each book.
I'm going through the books now, both looking for what classes they take and who the teachers are, and looking for vital information learned during quidditch games. I'll post my findings when I get them, but I'll stick it in the current day, so that nobody has to keep coming back here to look.... It will take me a few days to go through the three we've read, and I can add to the list going forward as we go.
But really, the quidditch games, or rather, some of the things learned in them, becomes vitally important later.
I enjoy them even though they don't necessarily always move the plot along.

PS. I'm halfway done with the 4th book. Thank you to everyone for the spoiler alerts. :)
It's like adding flavor to water. Not needed, but makes it more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteMeh.

Yep, I agree with Fiddleheads. Reiteration really gets on my nerves in most series but, the rules of quiditch seems to make me cringe every time.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy the game play though.
