Grim Defeat

BOOK: The Prisoner of Azkaban
CHAPTER: 9
SYNOPSIS: Snape takes over DADA because Lupin is sick. Harry loses his first Quidditch game.

POSSIBLE DISCUSSION TOPICS

* Should Harry have been told from the start that Sirius Black was potentially coming after him?
* Should Slytherin have had to forfit the game in order to not have to play, or do you agree that Hufflepuff played in their place because of Malfoy's 'injury'?
* Cedric!

  1. I think Slytherin should ABSOLUTELY have had to forefit. It's their own fault they don't have a back up seeker. To jump ahead just a tiny bit, when Harry doesn't have a broom anymore, making it a bit difficult to play a game on a broomstick, they don't get to put off their matches. And any teacher at that school would have known that Malfoy was faking, so yes, I think it's complete crap that they didn't have to play.

  2. I think the overriding theme of Quidditch is that it's an unsafe game, and you take your chances when you play. If Malfoy was hurt, too bad for him.

    So who was in charge of Quidditch? Madam Hooch? And was Snape influencing her? We are left to assume a lot.

    I like Cedric. He's a decent guy from the very first time we meet him.

  3. I had forgotten that both Cedric and Cho Chang appear for the first time in book 3. I always liked Cedric. He really was a nice guy.

    As far as Quidditch goes, there doesn't appear to be any real depth to the teams. There are no subs for any position. This aspect has always seemed contrived. There should have been subs and Slytherin should have played. I find it hard to believe that, out of the whole school, there aren't other kids just as capable at the athletics involved. Just one little quibble I've always had with the books.

    Someone, Madame Pomfrey perhaps, should have put an end to Malfoy's playacting and told him to suck it up and play.
