The Firebolt, The Patronus, Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw, & Snape's Grudge

Hey guys! My internet went down again so I missed a couple days. Also, I noticed that we left Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw off the schedule, so I shoved it right int here.

There's so much going on in these, I don't think we need discussion questions. :)

FOR TOMORROW: 15

  1. A couple of spoilers here:

How much of the time do you think Snape is reading Harry's mind? Do you think he is even harder on Harry because he knows he's lying half the time (e.g. that he hadn't just been to Hogsmeade)? Honestly, that boy gets himself into so much trouble that I'm not suprised Snape hates him, and Lupin is very justified in telling Harry off when he took the Marauders' Map.

How many teachers do you think there are at Hogwarts? There are the standards (McGonagall, Flitwick, Snape, DADA, Sprout) and we know a few extras - Hagrid, Telawney, Binns, Muggle Studies, Arithmancy and Runes. That makes 11. There must be more since there are 800 students at the school!

  2. SPOILER!!!!

That's funny because I had the same thoughts during the re-read of this about Snape. We know from the later books that he is very accomplished at both reading the minds of others AND at closing his own thoughts. (The latter becomes crucial in later books.)

I think though that it may be something that he has to "turn on" for want of a better term. However, with Harry acting suspicious, I'm sure Snape knew exactly where he'd been and had read his mind. The thing is that he probably couldn't use it in court as evidence. It would be like an illegal wiretap or something.

There have to be a lot more teachers but apparently they all sit at the head table. We never hear of any more than about eight to ten. I think this may be one of those points where you just have to go with it and not get too caught up in the details. :-)

  3. The biggest reason Snape hates Harry is because he looks so much like James, and they were mortal enemies like Harry and Draco, but with his mother's eyes, and (SPOILER) we now know how much Snape loved Lily...and every time he looks at Harry, he remembers she chose his arch-enemy over himself.

Professor Sinistra (sp?) in Astrology, Prof. Vector was Ancient Runes, and Madam Hooch (broomsticks and flying for first years in addition to Quiddich coach, referee and teacher) are a couple of more teachers, with Madam Pomfrey in hospital and Madam Pince in the library. Prof. Charity Burbage was Muggle Studies until her death in 7 when it was then taught by Alecto Carrow. Are we counting substitues? Prof. Grubbly-Plank for Care of Magical Creatures when Hagrid is out of school, and the one Hagrid took over for (Prof. Kettleburn) and do we count Prof. Slughorn who joins in Potions for the last two books? Wilkie Twicross for the short term of Apparition put in an appearance. Off-hand, I can't think of anyone else, although you know there has to be more because of the sheer numbers of students at Hogwarts. Since their subjects and themselves are not central to the plot, it keeps the major details to the minimum!

Just in passing, all the other teachers I can think of were all DADA teachers (well, in the case of Umbridge - she was a teacher-less teacher)but you take my meaning. Of course, Amycus Carrow simply taught Dark Arts, in book 7 instead of Defense Against it.
As you say, not enough teachers, yet we had our fill of them, even with so few mentioned.

  4. Thank you Heartwriter I was trying to remember the Astronomy teachers name.

I think this is where the movies give us a false sense of numbers because they only deal in the main characters. In a book, the illusion of more students and teachers that we never see is more believable. Having the images of the movie with only the primary characters in it, skews our perception.
