I love the mental image of the witch with the tray full of fingernails that go sliding all over the place. I think the purpose of the trip to diagon alley is to give us more reasons to distrust Draco, and set us up to really dislike Lockhart. As we watched Sorcerer's Stone this weekend, we decided to watch Chamber as well, just for fun. My daughter pointed out (and I agree with her) that the actor portraying Lockhart is similar in appearance (all except hair color) to a brunette man in our congregation. There is also a certain similarity of manner between the character and the man we know, as well. Jo said once that Lockhart was the only character based on a person she knew, but that the real person was "worse" and was so arrogant he would never recognize himself in the portrayal. I'm amazed there are two real people in the world who are so much like Lockhart. Does anyone else know someone who is a dead ringer for any of the Harry Potter characters?
Ah, Gilderoy Lockhart. Don't we all know someone like him? Arrogance is universal. I actually like the character - a good bit of comic relief, but as with all things HP, more to it than that.
I think the Burrow is worthy of mention here, as it is everything that the Dursleys' is not. It's a very small representation of the larger theme of love being the most important thing there is. I also love the shed with all the contraband muggle stuff in it!
I posted a long comment on the movie posting -- just wanted to mention it . . .
